Math Boy

Posted by: Denise

I am such a proud, proud momma!  My Drew is a math natural.  He almost can't help it; it's just the way he thinks.  Last week, he asked his 1st grade teacher what he would need to do in order to do "times" problems.  She sent him home with three math worksheets to challenge him and improve his skills.  He absolutely knows how to do them.  My long-ago degree is in math and I have a certain method for approaching math problems and what is so interesting to me is that Drew's approach to his problems is different than mine.  His thinking and quickness suggests a mindset of "it is just so" vs. my mindset of "look at the problem and figure out what needs to be done about it".  He's amazing.

The Year In Status

Posted by: Denise

This year I joined Facebook and, like millions of other members, I've shared my daily activities using short one-line statuses.  It is sort of interesting to read back through them as this year comes to a close.  It made me happy to see all the good times that I've had during the year and I laughed over a few of the boys' antics that I had already forgotten!

So, here's to a year of statuses!

Tyler, The Birthday Boy!

Posted by: Denise

My baby boy is 4 years old today!
This was such a fun, exciting day!  It's the first holiday that Tyler has really realized that he truly is the center of attention, and boy did he milk it for all it was worth!  This morning, we started with:
Denise:  "Tyler, please get your shoes on."
Tyler:  "Mom, please don't call me Tyler."
Denise (slightly irritated):  "What else should I be calling you?"
Tyler:  "Today, you should call me 'Birthday Boy'!!!!!"
And, so it was.  The Birthday Boy headed off to school loaded with Rice Krispie Treats for all of his friends and a baseball to put in everyone's cubby.

This was our walk to the bus stop with Drew.  What a cute face!  I just love your smile!
This was while we were waiting for the bus to come pick up Drew. And, this is a typical Tyler, ahem--I mean Birthday Boy-- look.
You finally have a Mater!

And, a new Star Wars toy too.

We love you so much, Tyler!  Hugs and Kisses to the Birthday Boy!

The First Lost Tooth

Posted by: Denise

Drew lost his very first tooth today!  He was incredibly excited to be able to put that tooth in the Tooth Fairy box that I just bought for him yesterday!  It was perfect timing too because tomorrow the boys have a dentist appointment and I was worried that the dentist would have to take it out for him.  Just look at that face!  He looks so proud.

More S'Mores!

Posted by: Denise

This is one of our favorite family things to do.  Toasting marshmallows and having s'mores just fills me with happiness!  And, you might think--how could a s'more not fill you with gooey marshmallowy chocolatey goodness?!  But, it's not actually the s'mores that make me so happy.  It's the fact that it's cool enough to be around the fire.  ... that the smell of burning eucalyptus leaves will remind me of my backyard.  And, that even after a busy day of bus and car rides, preschool pickup and dropoff, working, pizza eating, book reading, bath, and bedtime, it only takes a few minutes to toast marshmallows and be together as a family just having fun.  I like that.

Ode to a Blankie

Posted by: Denise

I finally got it.  A photo of you with your blankie.  When you were just a baby, I tried to get you to fall in love with a sweet, soft teddy bear.  No--Tyler is the boy who loves a blankie.  And not just any blankie; it's the one that Mommy made.  I wish that I could say that this blankie was made especially for you, but it really wasn't.  I started knitting this when I found out that my friend Heather was expecting her first little girl.  This knitting pattern was very time consuming!  I missed the baby deadline for Heather, put the unfinished project in a drawer, and finally pulled it out and finished it before Drew was born.  But, it's not his blankie.  It wasn't truly loved until you came along.  You're almost four now and all too soon this blankie with join the other special things in the box of time gone by.  I'm not ready and, for now at least, neither are you.  I'm just fine with that.
